What is a healthcare surrogate?

A healthcare surrogate, sometimes called an “agent”, is a person appointed by you to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are not able to make or communicate them yourself. The healthcare surrogate is one form of an advance health care directive, a statement of your wishes in case you are not able to express them. Advance healthcare directives, including the healthcare surrogate, are governed by state laws so it may be wise to consult a local attorney if you have any questions. The law recognizes the right of every competent adult to make his or her own decisions about healthcare matters; this includes the right to refuse medical treatment when it is no longer wanted. As long as a person is alive, competent and able to communicate their wishes, they have the sole power to continue or stop medical treatment.  Unfortunately, there are cases in which the ill or injured person is not able to make decisions or to...

Finding Assisted Living is Looking Out for Our Veterans!

Recently, Finding Assisted Living published an article (“Are there any benefits that help pay for an assisted living facility”) detailing a benefit that may be available to veterans or their surviving spouses. For those who are eligible, this benefit may help to pay for the cost of an assisted living facility. When applied to the veteran himself or herself, this program is most commonly called the “Aid and Attendance” or A & A benefit. It is called the “Improved Death Pension Benefit with Aid and Attendance” entitlement when applied to a veteran’s surviving spouse. The Aid and Attendance benefit is one of the lesser known benefits available to veterans. Many veterans and even some attorneys or financial planners may not correctly understand it. Qualifying for A & A benefits does not depend on service-related injuries; it is intended for veterans and surviving spouses who require the attendance of another person to assist with routine daily functions such as eating, bathing and...

Help avoid fraud by monitoring your Medicare account

Help avoid fraud by monitoring your Medicare account

Medicare and Social Security benefits are the two most important programs that affect the health and wellbeing of older Americans. Both of these programs are overwhelmingly popular with the public. In 2015, a poll commissioned by the Kaiser Family Health Foundation found that 87% of all Americans viewed Social Security favorably while 77% had a positive view of Medicare. They are the two most popular government programs in America. The same poll found that many Americans do not think that these programs are sustainable. One of the reasons is the fraud and abuse that is sometimes, perhaps often, found in both programs. Medicare spending in 2016 amounts to a total of $672.6 billion. Medicare will provide health insurance to 57 million Americans who are 65 or older, disabled, or have end-stage renal disease. Fraud in the Medicare program steals benefits and services that should rightly go to these deserving recipients. You should care greatly about this if you are a taxpayer or...

Are There Any Veterans Benefits That Help Pay For An Assisted Living Facility?

The correct answer to this question is a qualified, “Yes”. There is a Veterans Administration benefit that may be available to a veteran or their spouse under certain conditions. This benefit may provide financial assistance up to a maximum of $1,949 per month. It is called the Aid and Attendance” (A & A) entitlement and it is an additional benefit available to those who are eligible for the “Non-Service Connected Disability Pension Benefit” or the “Improved Death Pension Benefit with Aid and Attendance.” Aid and Attendance is the most commonly used term when referring to these benefits. A & A benefits are available to wartime Veterans and their surviving spouses.  It is a part of the Veterans Administration’s Disability and Death Pension program. Be sure that you understand the meaning of the terms, “Pension” and “Aid and Attendance”, as the VA uses them and also the eligibility requirements for each. In this case, the term “Pension” means a VA benefit paid to...

The Senior Transition Pro Team is dedicated to making every person’s transition to a senior lifestyle the best one possible, the right one for them! Americans now live longer than ever before, staying healthy and independent for many additional years. Still, a time comes when remaining “home instead” is no longer the best choice. Decisions made now will affect health and happiness for many years to come. If the house is simply too much to keep up but the senior is otherwise healthy, a 55+ community or senior apartment may be a wise choice. However, for many an assisted living facility, a skilled nursing facility or a nursing home may be necessary. The range of needs, requirements and options is wide and confusing. Few people are prepared or qualified to make these choices alone. That is...
