Diabetes Prevention and Management

Diabetes

DiabetesOn Monday, our team at OurSeniors.net wrote a blog about the risk of diabetes in seniors. Today, as promised, we would like to explore the different ways our readers can prevent or manage diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body converts food into energy. People who suffer from diabetes either do not produce enough insulin or create too much insulin. This unstable production of insulin does not allow the body to use sugar carried in the blood for energy properly. Though there is no cure for diabetes, there are ways control and prevent the disease. Here are a few ways to manage/prevent diabetes

  • Know your ABC’s
    • Average blood glucose level in the past three months
    • Blood Pressure
    • Cholesterol numbers
  • Stop smoking
  • Healthy meal plans
    • Whole grains
    • Fruits
    • Vegetables
    • Lean Meats
    • Low-fat dairy
    • Fish
    • Skinless poultry
  • Be physically active daily
    • Walk 10,000 steps
    • Swim
    • Dance
    • Lightly jog

Aside from all the tips above, seniors who have already been diagnosed with diabetes should also:

  • Always take their medicine
  • Monitor their glucose levels daily
  • Find ways to combat the possible onset of depression

Though there is no cure for diabetes, the disease is preventable and manageable. By following and practicing these steps you can avoid grave health problems like vision loss and kidney disease. Find a local health team to support you and keep up with all of your medical appointments. Health care is the truest form of self-care so take care of your body and your body will take care of you.
If you have prediabetes and would like to reverse it there is a CDC-recognized health program that can help you.
