Books That Talk

OurSeniors.net is dedicated to serving the needs of seniors in every way possible.  Naturally, we recognize and honor the contributions of the many other private and public organizations who share this dedication. We also like to spotlight some of those senior-friendly professionals from time to time.

One of those fine service organizations is the Florida Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services. This service is part of a Florida state agency that works in cooperation with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (part of the United States Library of Congress). In Florida, it is administered through the Division of Blind Services of the Florida Department of Education. The city of Daytona Beach is honored to be the home of the Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services from which it provides services to the entire state, with the participation of nine sub-regional Libraries.

The Library distributes books and magazines in braille and audio formats to individuals who are not able to read standard print due to visual impairment, physical disability, or certifiable reading disability.  A good many of these people are our seniors, the very people we wish to serve. Both talking books and the braille editions are delivered through the U.S. Postal service at no cost to the Library user, or they may be downloaded. Their collection includes English and Spanish titles as well as other languages. The service also includes the long-term loan of a digital player for listening to audio books, including amplified headphones for those with hearing loss; it is free to any adult or child who qualifies.

The Division of Blind Services also offers additional services and help that may be useful to many of our seniors.  Independent Living training and other services are available at no cost to visually impaired seniors, through the Division. For more information, please call 1-800-342-1828.
Volunteering is a wonderful way to enrich senior life, and the Braille and Talking Books Library offers an ideal way for local residents to be of service. If you like to work with your hands, volunteers are needed to help refurbish digital players. Are you good with clerical tasks? Help with labeling and mass mailings. If you like working on the computer, review audio books and magazines produced in the Recording Studio. Native Spanish speakers are urgently needed to review in Spanish! Volunteer opportunities do change, so please call 386-239-6000 to ask about current openings and find more information.

Service to seniors is our privilege and we try to be of service in many ways. Just look at:
