A Senior Virtual Happy Hour!

skypeAs COVID-19 spreads and the world slows down, most people are staying indoors with little to no contact with the outside world. This crisis has brought both fear and anxiety to many, but there is a silver lining. The world has been granted the rare gift of time and stillness. In this stillness, we can reconnect with projects we have always wanted to finish and even learn a few things along the way! Thankfully technology provides us the luxury of being able to contact our friends and family virtually. There are even apps that allow you to have online parties with more than 15 people connected! Through these virtual connections, seniors can go to Zumba classes or have a cocktail hour with their friends.
Here are a few apps to get your virtual happy hour started:

  • Zoom (Great for parties and classes)
  • Discord (Has voice, video, and text, great for groups, clubs or friends)
  • NetflixParty (You can watch movies with your friends)
  • Eventbrite (Online social events)
  • Google Docs (As an instant chat app, email the page to your friends, you can add over 300 people!)
  • Google Hangouts (User-friendly meetings)
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Whatsapp
  • Skype
  • Instagram Messenger

However, you choose to connect is up to you! Take advantage of modern technology and combat cabin fever. We can still be social and connect with others virtually; we just have to think “outside the box.” During this crisis, avoid going out and exposing yourself to COVID-19. If there is any hope of slowing down this virus, we need to practice social distancing as a community. Stay home and stay safe.
Readers, if you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, call your nearest medical facility and seek care right away. If you have an underlying condition like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or respiratory conditions, stay away from crowded areas or places. These guidelines were provided by both the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no need to panic but stay informed.
