The end of fall marks the beginning of the holiday season. The holidays can be a joyful yet lonely time, especially for seniors. During the winter season the holidays can provoke a real syndrome called the holiday blues. The holiday blues are a feeling of overwhelming sorrow, introspection, and solitude. It steals the joys of the holiday season and can have long term effects on an individual. Possible causes of holiday blues involve: Tiredness Delusional expectations Tension Over-commercialization Financial anxiety Distance from family and friends According to a survey published by the American Psychological Association, 38 percent of people felt a rise in stress, anxiety, and depression levels between the weeks of Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. The holiday blues typically dissipate a week or two after the holiday season and should not be confused for depression, which can be long-lasting.
